Ah … the great outdoors …

What a beautiful day on the Gold Coast!  Even more so because Mummy Kaz has let me out to do an explore of the garden. And … it’s about bloody time! I see Kaz and Sooz going out all the time but do they think to take me out and give me some sunshine and some fresh air?  No … they do not! Not until I manage to guilt Kaz into it … and let me tell you, that’s not an easy thing to do.

Me … finally in the yard again …

It was good out there though … until I realised that Kaz was stalking me around the yard, trying to get the perfect photo. I say that as though it’s a bad thing … and believe me it is … because she’s trying to get a shot of me in that 4H which she can caption with something like “Does Nigey’s bottom look big in this … why, yes, yes it does!” She is so rude … and this is a big call but I think she borders on being more rude than I am sometimes.

But I guess I’m lucky that she’s spending any time with me at all. She’s been locking herself in her office again and those words keep floating out … study, typing for Peter. I offer to go in there to help her but she keeps ushering me out … and then locking me out – saying she doesn’t need me to be kissing and cuddling her legs while she’s trying to concentrate. I know that would help her do things better but she’s not prepared to even give it a go.
So, Mummy Sooz and I have to entertain ourselves for hours while she’s in there. And you know, sometimes we all just have to take long naps so the time passes as quickly as it can until we hear that magic click which means the door is opening and she’s coming out to be with us all.

The cat in the hat …

They went out again this morning but not quite so early. As they were leaving Kaz said “we’re off to have Brekkie with Aunty M” … so I guess that’s why they were leaving at 8 and not 6:30am. No doubt they were going to talk about my Archnemesis’ exploits – how she runs to the end of the pier when Aunty M tells her to, how she can leave just a couple of cookies at breakfast and then go back for them later, how she sleeps in Mouse’s sink, how she hangs from her paws from the pool fence as she chases after birds … the list goes on … and on … and on. I know this because Kaz and Sooz keep talking about it – sometimes like I’m not ever here … c’mon you two … be a bit considerate … she is my AN afterall!
It only took a couple of tries at pestering Kaz when they arrived back for her to get 4H out so I could take a wander in the yard. I wonder if it will ever get any easier to decide to put it on … especially as we still appear to be living with the “no harness, no outside” rule. Yes Kaz, no need to tell me every time I even start to look at the door (let alone standing up against it on my back legs) … I get it already! I really do.
I’m not sure what she was looking for but Kaz spent a lot of time emptying boxes out of the cupboard in my room and distributing them, a little messily I thought, around the place. I don’t care for me but it is Sooz’s Studio … and no Kaz it doesn’t matter if she hasn’t started using it, you have to make sure you keep the surfaces clear for her for when she does.
The only exception would be if the cap was in there … that can go absolutely anywhere because I love it … and that I can be a character from literature when I’m with it … The Cat in the Hat … that’s me … that’s me.

Sleeping arrangements …

The trick, Kaz, is to try not to look as though you are running up the hall so you can lock me out of the bedroom! I’m not saying you are a obviously slow runner but you are not fast … at all.  And, would you believe, stealth is not your strong suit either! And that thing about letting me sleep in the bedroom with the Mummies certainly didn’t last long.  I counted one night! One night! That’s not very much at all.  I can count that on one paw … four times!  But at least they make sure my warm blankie is on the couch so I have a choice about my sleeping spots.

Me in the penthouse (sweet) … I still love it!

And where on earth are they going in the mornings now? They leap (okay, that’s an exaggeration) out of bed before 7, throw on their clothes from yesterday, and are off. I’ve never known them to get up this early … unless they were going off somewhere – and they have their bags with them them … but they’re back soon after they leave. Hmmmm.

I am trying to make sure Kaz takes proper breaks while she is working … she is spending a lot of time with her computer these days – something about “study” I think I heard, and of course “typing for Peter” (whatever that is).  But she can be at that computer for minutes at a time and I know that can be bad for her … yes, Kaz you do move your lips when you read sometimes, and you do say things out loud … and that’s how I know about RSI and WH&S and stuff like that.  So, I do my bit – by gently nipping at her leg to let her know that it’s time to take a break, stand up, stretch, walk around a bit … get me some new cookies (I CAN SEE THE BOTTOM!), play stringey thing, take me outside for a walk … you know, the things that she would be doing if she wasn’t at the computer!

What fun … what fun!

Kaz says she is going to start a “demerit system” – whatever that is – because she thinks I am too naughty (read:  blatantly disobedient) when she takes me outside on the 4H (Hot Horrible Hairy Harness if you’re new around here!). Just because she says “don’t go over the fence” she thinks that means I’m not allowed to.  But it is so much nicer over there … and it’s not that it’s still not our yard.  Just because she’s too lazy to open the gate doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be allowed in there … because we all know there is so much more grass over there … and OMG, it is so much greener!

But I’m really not complaining (although I might when I find out what a “demerit system” is … it doesn’t sound good) because at least she took me outside today.  There are some days when she doesn’t even!  Yesterday was one of those … she told Mummy Sooz that she was busy doing “typing” and then she was busy doing “studying” – and she locked herself in the office (read: locked me out) while she was doing both those things.  And by the time she was finished, it was dark … and no-one wants to go outside in the dark – so she says but let me tell you, she’s wrong about that too!

My stringey thing sometimes spends more time in the bedroom that I do!

So … I showed them!  Last night as Sooz was coming back into the bedroom – Kaz had locked me out earlier – I ran in and straight under the bed because there’s no way either of them can reach me when I’m tucked way under there.  And if they can’t reach me, then they can’t throw me out!  I’m on to them.  To Sooz’s credit she kept trying to hug me tight every time I did come out to have a look-see but I am way too fast for her and each time she thought she had me, I’d duck back under the bed.  We had such fun … for over an hour!  It was after 1am by the time I took pity on her and let her catch me …. that’s what I’ll be telling Kaz at least – she slept through the whole thing – but really what happened was by that stage I was a bit tired and when Sooz was off at the toilet, I curled up in her spot and was almost asleep when she pounced … and took me out of the bedroom.  She seemed quite chuffed with herself.  But I did hear them talking this morning and they are saying that because it’s so cold at the moment, they are going to let me sleep in the bedroom tonight to “see how I go”.

Artist’s representation of what it would have looked like when Sooz came back to bed last night … except the covers were down, I was snuggled in more, and there was the sound of gentle snoring (heh heh) from Kaz’s sleep machine.
They’re always bringing me new and exciting things to try out!
